I made a deal with the devil, though he went by no such name.
Instead, he went by Arrow with a target and an aim.
He introduced himself as Love, Hate, Beauty, and Envy.
Trust, Rage, and lost in a frenzy
He warned that in my state I should be wary
of love, hate, beauty, and envy.
He warned me in daylight and threatened my fears.
He asked what I wanted, I wanted no tears.
He promised no longer would I ever cry,
so he gave me the moon, the stars, and the sky.
But he left the moon in pieces, and dimmed every star.
I had held my breath in waiting to know why he’d go so far.
He punctured the sky and it blew away with the breeze,
So he gave me the world, and he poisoned the seas.
I made a deal with the devil, though he went by no such name.
Instead he went by Love, a love that never came.
He painted roses in my eyelids and made their thorns of soot and ash.
He played music with my heart strings until the melody had passed
and though his tempo never faltered and his will could never break.
He assured I was left heartless and the rest was up to fate
The devil as he was revealed upon the next daybreak
Kept ambition in its slumber, and left nothing in his wake.
The devil as I gathered cracked my heart until it shattered
And smiled as he ground my bones into darkened matter.
I made a deal with the devil, though he went by no such name.
Instead he went by Hate, and hatred he became.
He burned my wings in anger until I couldn’t fly
And like Icarus but without laughter let me fall to die
Said the wings were just a sentiment with nowhere to be
I was just killing time before time killed me
He told me close your heart, and sleep in the hands of time
Serenade what you don’t keep, with liars and rhyme
Outrun the screaming thunderstorm, that echoes in your mind
Outrun the dreaming good and worn, hand in hand with mine
I made a deal with the devil, though he went by no such name.
Instead he went by Beauty, a beautiful losing game.
Instead he went by Envy, and stoked a dying flame
Instead he went by Trust, and never shouldered any blame.
Instead he went by Rage, and with it drowning me in shame.
He warned me, had I listened, would it still end up the same?
He warned me, had I listened, would it still end up the same?
He warned me, had I listened, would I still take all the blame?
